The secret to doing more of what you love

Doing more of what you love is important, here’s why…

Recently I was in Brighton, Bournemouth, Reading and Fulham mid week. And that’s me in the picture at Craven Cottage in London recently. I’m away pretty much once a fortnight for most of the year and have been for the last three years. But I wasn’t in all of these places for work – my love is following my favourite football team around the country. I haven’t missed a home match in more than a decade and I can count the number of away matches I’ve missed on one hand.

Some people would say I’m lucky that my business allows me to do that, but the truth is I’ve worked hard to make sure the business is designed to allow me to have the lifestyle I desire and follow my passion.

I spend a lot of time with business owners and there are many who can’t remember the last time they had a holiday – or the last time they had an uninterrupted holiday. There is often talk of long hours, working at the weekend and servicing ever-more demanding clients to tighter-than-realistic deadlines.

So what’s the solution?

I have the free time to do more of what I love because my talent strategy is working. It ensures that I have a strong and capable team allowing me to deliver what my clients need and providing me with the time and the income to make my hobby a possibility. I’ve invested time in my team selection, in identifying the right people with the right blend of skills and values to competently deliver those tasks I don’t want to and who work with me to make my business stronger.

Loving what you do also relates to the clients you work with.  Do you love all of yours, or are there some who make your heart sink when their caller ID shows on your phone? It’s essential to get this element of your business correct too.

So what is it that puts fire in your belly?  Some of this will be domestic and some will relate to work.  The reason I set up Tendo was to help business owners have the freedom to choose how, when and where they work, so they were building the right business.  Outside of work and away from family, it is football.

Are you spending enough time doing what you love in and out of work, or do you find yourself pulled away to do other things which don’t set your heart on fire?

Are you working with amazing clients or ones that just help you survive? What do you need to be able to do more of what you love? And how are you going to do it?

Developing a dream team is one of the essential building blocks to running a successful business. If you are working too many hours or are frustrated about any element of your team, it’s time to take action.
