Why many leaders avoid the one thing that could help them most

Many business owners would benefit enormously from business mentoring, yet they never engage with it. It isn’t because they don’t need it, but because they misunderstand what business mentoring actually is.

Statistics suggest that only approx. 15% of the SMEs in the UK have engaged an expert for support, compared to over 50% in the US.

For some, it sounds like you’d be getting generic advice. For others, it feels like admitting they’re struggling and we know that (especially male) pride can get in the way.

Also, many ask for business coaching (just look at LinkedIn posts daily) because they don’t understand what business mentoring is and what it can deliver.

Done well, business mentoring is a strategic tool that helps capable business owners and leaders make better decisions, faster.

A lot of the confusion comes from common myths about what mentoring involves.

In practice, effective business mentoring looks very different:

  • It is not just advice. A good business mentor brings experience and structured thinking to help you test assumptions, evaluate risk and think through decisions more clearly

  • It is not someone telling you what to do. Strong business mentors challenge your thinking, ask better questions and help uncover blind spots you might not see from inside the business

  • It is not only for struggling businesses. Many high-performing founders actively seek business mentoring because growth brings complexity, new decisions and higher stakes

  • It is not just a conversation. Effective business mentoring is outcome-focused, with each session creating clarity around priorities, decisions and next steps

  • It is not a last resort. The most effective leaders use business mentoring early to sharpen strategy and avoid expensive mistakes

There is also an important distinction between business coaching and mentoring

Business coaching is powerful because it helps unlock potential. It can improve awareness, behaviours and leadership capability.

But business coaching alone can only take you so far.

Business mentoring adds something different, learned experience. A business mentor has already navigated many of the challenges you are facing and used this experience to bring practical perspective to strategic decisions and help you develop your skills and in turn your business.

Ultimately, business mentoring is not about fixing problems.  It is about helping owners and leaders think better, see further and move faster.

When used well, business mentoring becomes less about support and more about acceleration, giving owners and leaders the insight and perspective they need to grow stronger businesses with greater confidence.
