Your numbers don’t lie, but you probably do
Most MDs I speak to under £1M turnover tell themselves a comfortable story.
“Sales are steady."
“Margins are fine.”
“We’ll be okay next quarter.”
But the numbers, the real ones, tell the truth.
If you’re not tracking the right KPIs properly, you’re not leading with clarity. You’re leading with optimism and blind hope.
Hope doesn’t scale a business. In fact, it usually does the opposite.
KPIs shouldn’t be something you glance at once a quarter at best. Or worse, something your accountant tells you about at the year-end meeting, explaining how (badly) you’ve done.
The critical KPIs should be cascaded down to your team so everyone understands what actually drives performance. They should be visible daily if necessary, reviewed weekly, analysed monthly.
When numbers are visible and accountability is in place, behaviour changes. You and the team start acting based on facts, rather than gut feel.
When numbers aren’t visible, drift creeps in and you end up firefighting.
The consequences of not tracking properly:
You convince yourself cash is “tight but manageable” - until it isn’t
You scale the busiest or sexiest offer, not the most profitable one
You delay tough decisions because the data feels unclear
You firefight symptoms instead of fixing root causes
And by the time reality sets in, it’s too late and very expensive.
Now compare that with disciplined tracking - when KPIs are clear, shared and reviewed consistently.
The benefits are commercial and powerful:
Decisions are faster and based on evidence
Risk shows up early, while it’s still manageable and can be mitigated
The team understands how their actions affect profit and adjusts
Strategy becomes proactive instead of reactive
The stress and anxiety are replaced with focus, energy and stronger leadership.
Weekly meetings become more focused. Monthly reviews become more strategic. Daily activity becomes more aligned.
Knowing your numbers isn’t obsession, it’s control.
Your numbers don’t lie. The only question is whether you’re ready to stop lying to yourself.
Every single client I work with has a bespoke set of KPIs (I call them BGIs but that’s for another day) that we review monthly for accountability and to tweak the strategies that drive results.
Isn’t it time you had a dashboard that holds you and your team to account?
