The Famous Cock – Shameless self-adulation and promotion

The Famous Cock

This is post 3/ 12 in a series about the pub crawl by my namesake Gary King and his friends in the Worlds End and the close association with Business Mentoring & coaching.

Stop smirking, this is a serious business post.

It’s become all too easy in recent times for people to re-brand themselves up as a business coach and start selling their wares online.

Sadly for their clients – and for the industry as a whole – the only qualification or experience those coaches have is that they’re good at gaming social media; gaining likes, gaining fans, gaining eyes their way.

They have the knack of building an audience and posting for engagement, and this in turn gives them the platform they crave to sell whatever they want – knowing that people will buy into it because of who they are, rather than how good the offer might be.

It’s a bit like celebrities when they branch out into ambassador roles or flogging their own merch. People will buy any old shit they’re selling or promoting, purely because it’s got their name on it.

The same applies to business coaching, where there are most definitely some recognised names among the ranks (individuals and franchises), and so people believe the hype and the results promised.

So, with that in mind, the next time you wonder if the business coach in front of you might be right for you and your business, think to yourself…

Am I seeing a lot of their genuine clients sharing results and testimonials because this person has proven they’re the real deal?

Or…

Am I just blinded by a shedload of shameless self-adulation and promotion because this person is simply a bit of a famous cock?

You know it’s a fair question, because the posturing on LinkedIn is immense, at times.

In fact, it’s enough to drive anyone to drink… I’m off to the pub.
