Ten reasons to avoid hiring a Business Mentor – part two

Following on from last week’s part one, where I gave you five reasons not to hire a Business Mentor, here are five more compelling reasons why having a Business Mentor should be avoided.

6. “I’ll just make my own mistakes; it’s how I learn!”  Mistakes are an inevitable part of business; I am happy to make them and learn as I go. I don’t need help.

With a Business Mentor, you can learn from their mistakes as well as your own, instead of just making your own.  Mentors share their past failures and lessons learned, helping you avoid costly errors, navigate potential pitfalls more effectively and get there quicker.

7. “It’s my way, or the highway!” Business owners are often control freaks (remember – if you’re not in control, you’re just a freak). Running a business can sometimes make it difficult to see the bigger picture and let’s not forget that pride often prevents some asking for help.

A Business Mentor offers an external perspective, providing honest and unbiased feedback. Their constructive criticism can help you identify blind spots and refine your strategies for better outcomes.

It is no longer a weakness to ask for help.

8. “I’m at the top of my game, I don’t need to learn anything new!” You are running a business and have all the knowledge, skills and experience you need.

But you don’t know what you don’t know.Business Mentors often possess a range of skills and expertise in various aspects of entrepreneurship that you don’t have. By working closely with them, you can learn new skills, whether it’s negotiation, leadership, sales, or strategic planning. This continuous learning can enhance your capabilities and help you become a well-rounded business leader.

9. “I’m too afraid, I don’t think I can grow!” Launching and growing a business can be intimidating, especially if you’re stepping into uncharted territory. Often you can be like the proverbial rabbit caught in the car headlights.

A Business Mentor can provide reassurance, reminding you of your strengths and helping you overcome self-doubt. Their belief in your potential can be a powerful confidence booster.  They can help you become unstuck and get started on your journey.

“10. I haven’t got time for this!” In the whirlwind of day-to-day operations, working long hours and battling through multiple to-do lists as long as your arm, it’s easy to lose sight of long-term goals and not have time to plan.

Now you have read the ten reasons, we would recommend you don’t hire a Business Mentor so you can stay just where you are.
